New York, N.Y.----- For the second consecutive year, San Jose State University's Billy Freeman is among the candidates listed on the John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List.
The John Mackey Award honors the best tight end in college football and is named after the Pro Football Hall of Fame Baltimore Colts player who revolutionized the position in the 1960's. The Midseason Watch List recognizes those tight ends that played superior football in the first half of the season.
Freeman leads the Spartans (3-3, 2-1 Mountain West) with three touchdown catches. He is second on the team with 26 receptions for 282 yards. Nationally, he is tied for sixth among players listed as tight ends in number of receptions.
The 6-foot-3, 232-pound junior from Mesa, Ariz., is one of 35 listed on the Midseason Watch List and one of three players honored twice for the award's weekly honor roll. He received honorable mention honors for the second time in three weeks after catching five passes for 45 yards and an 11-yard touchdown in San Jose State's 33-27 overtime win at UNLV last Saturday. His touchdown catch tied the score at 10-10 in the second quarter as the Spartans won their first road game of the season and improved their overall record to 3-3, 2-1 in Mountain West action.
