Stockton, Calif.----- Paced by a pair of top-three finishes in the 200 medley and 400 free relays, San Jose State University is in third place after the first night of the Pacific Invitational women's swimming meet.
The Spartans were third in the 200 medley relay and second in the 400 freestyle relay. The two relay races accounted for almost one-quarter of San Jose State's 272 points in the five team meet. Nevada is first with 513 and host Pacific is next with 313. Fresno State at 237 and Fresno Pacific at 121 complete the field.
"We had a real solid first day," said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins about the first night of action for the 2015-16 season. Twenty-one (21) entries scored points in the seven individual events. "We had rust to shake off."
Sophomore Colleen Humel's second place finish in the 100 backstroke was the highest placing by a San Jose State swimmer on the first of two days of competition. Humel posted a 56.22 in the 100 backstroke.
Senior Riley Spitser turned in a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a 1:51.92 clocking.
"We can have a very strong day tomorrow (Saturday)," added Coach Hopkins.
The two-day meet concludes on Saturday, October 24, at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool with the first event starting at 10:00 a.m.
