New York, N.Y.----- For the third time this season, San Jose State University's Billy Freeman is one of two honorable mention selections for the John Mackey Tight End of the Week Award.
The John Mackey Award honors the nation's best tight end in college football and is named after the Baltimore Colts great who revolutionized the position in the National Football League in the 1960's. The weekly awards program highlights individual play by tight ends during the season.
Freeman played an important role in San Jose State's 31-21 win over New Mexico on October 24. His 25-yard touchdown reception with 18 seconds left in the second quarter put the Spartans ahead to stay, 21-14. The junior from Mesa, Ariz., finished the game with three receptions for 40 yards and the one touchdown.
For the season, Freeman leads San Jose State with four touchdown catches and is third on the team with 29 receptions for 322 yards.
Freeman also received John Mackey Award honorable mention honors after the San Jose State wins over Fresno State on September 26 and UNLV on October 10.
Eight semifinalists will be announced on November 16 and three finalists named on November 24. The winner of the 2015 John Mackey Award will be announced on December 9 and presented on December 10 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.
