In their first dual meet of the season, the San José State Spartans' take on the No. 7-ranked and defending Pac-12 champions California Bears in Berkeley on Friday, Oct. 30.
"Cal is one of the best teams in all of collegiate swimming and has many of the top swimmers in the world," said Spartans' Head Coach Sage Hopkins. "It's going to give our swimmers and divers the opportunity to go up against the best."
The Spartans four member diving team will be joining the swimmers on Friday, competing in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. San José State's top diver Cari Reiswig leads the team against Cal's squad. Reiswig set record marks for the Spartans in the 1- and 3-meter dives against UC Santa Cruz and Simon Fraser last season.
"This will be our first opportunity for the divers to compete for the year, so we are looking for a good solid start from them," Hopkins said.
After finishing fourth at the Pacific Invitational to open the season, Hopkins has focus areas he wants the team to improve on. "First we want to improve from where we were a week ago. We want to improve in terms of our tactical aspects of our races," Hopkins said.
San José State's freestyle swimming record holder Riley Spitser will be in competition against California after finishing first in the 500- and 1650-meter freestyle swims at the Pacific Invitational.
"It's going to be great preparation with the A3 Invitational and the Trojan Diving Invite in a few weeks," Hopkins said.
