BERKELEY, Calif. - San José State saw nearly its full 2015-16 roster in action for the first time when action at the Cal Nike Fall Invitational kicked off Friday at on the University of California campus.
In the "Blue" doubles flight, Gaelle Rey and Marie couldn't repeat the early tournament success they had two weekends ago, as the pair dropped an 8-5 decision to Arizona State's Kassidy Jump and Sammi Hampton.
Transfer junior Marine Dans got her first taste of action as a Spartan when she partnered with Sybille Gauvain in "Gold" doubles play and stormed past Nevada's Adriana Grgelyova nad Claudia Herrero, 8-3. Dans and Gauvain are playing as the second-seeded tandem in the "Gold" bracket.
Freshman Miyo Kobayashi joined Dans as a winner in her debut. The Bangkok, Thailand, native paired with senior Justine Deleval for an 8-6 win in the "White" flight.
In "Blue" singles play, Sybille Gauvain coasted past Cal's Olivia Hauger, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 32. Gauvain went on to take the first set from ASU's Hampton in the round of 16 but saw the Sun Devil rebound for a three-set win.
With Rey and Dans in "Gold" singles and Kobayashi and Deleval in "White," the Spartans saw all four advance to Saturday's rounds. Rey, the top seed in the "Gold" flight, picked up a straight-set win in the round of 32 and then saw her opponent retire due to injury in the middle of a tightly-contested round of 16 match.
Dans took down USF's Genevieve McCloskey in straight sets before shutting out UC Davis' Alexandra Huie, 6-0, 6-0. Kobayashi and Deleval rounded out the solid singles showing with straight-set and three-set wins, respectively.
Action continues from the Hellman Tennix Complex and Channing Tennis Courts with the continuation of doubles play at 8:30 a.m. and singles at 11:00 a.m. Matches at Hellman can be viewed via web stream.
