Oct. 9, 2015

MORAGA, Calif. - San José State University's women's tennis team got off to a hot start in Friday's opening rounds of action at the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.

The Spartans were winners in eight of the 12 matches they played Friday, going 4-2 in both singles and doubles.

Gaelle Rey and Marie Klocker entered the tournament as the top doubles seed but were upended in the first round by Stanford's Lindsey Kostas and Kimberly Yee, 8-5. Klocker and Rey rebounded to post an 8-3 win over Portland's Emily Gould and Maja Mladenovic in the first round of consolation play.

Marine Dans and Sybille Gauvain continued to build on their 3-1 record at last weekend's Cal Nike Invitational by notching a pair of wins on Friday and advancing to Saturday's semifinals. The duo upset third-seeded Deimante Bulatovaite and Alina Soltanici of Sac State in the first round, 8-6, and cruised past Fresno State's Olivia Noble and Anneka Watts, 8-1, in the quarterfinals.

After going 3-0 last weekend, Justine Deleval and Miyo Kobayashi were victorious via walkover in the round of 16 before suffering their first defeat of the season, 8-2, to Santa Clara's Chelby Cooke and Janet Liu.

Later in the day, Dans, Gauvain, Klocker and Kobayashi all advanced to Saturday's round of 16 in the singles brackets. All were victorious in straight sets except for Klocker, who dropped a tightly-contested first set to Gonzaga's Alexandra Bourguignon before storming back for the win.

Saturday's doubles get underway at 8:30 a.m., and singles follow at 2:00 p.m.
