Smith Leads Spartans in Exhibition Win

San Jose, Calif. - Junior Jasmine Smith scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the San José State women's basketball team in an 84-61 exhibition win over the Sonoma State Seawolves on Sunday afternoon in The Event Center.

Despite shooting just 36 percent (34-of-93) from the floor including 21 percent (10-of-47) from beyond the arc, the Spartans were in control of the game from the outset. They jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first two minutes and never looked back.

SJSU had 11 steals, forced the Seawolves into 27 turnovers and scored 22 point of those Sonoma State mistakes. Inside the team used its size advantage to outscore its opponent by 24 points (46-to-22) in the paint.

San José State out rebounded the Seawolves 55-to-52, grabbed 26 offensive boards and turned those into 20 second-chance points.

The Spartans, playing in the NCAA's new four 10-minute quarter format, led by six points after one period, 14 at halftime, 22 after the third period before finishing Sonoma State off by the final margin of 23 points, 84-61.

In addition to Smith, three other Spartans scored double figures. Junior Rachol West who led the team with four three-pointers finished with 14 points, junior Paris Baird had 11 and sophomore Myzhanique Ladd added 10. Senior Riana Byrd ripped down 17 rebounds and added eight points.

Junior Aniya Baker dished out 10 assists to go along with her six points. She also led the team with five steals. Senior Emily Vann added nine points on three three-pointers.

The Spartans conclude the exhibition portion of their schedule on Monday, November 9 when they host Holy Names University in The Event Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Live Stats and streaming audio are available at the Women's Basketball schedule page at www.sjsuspartans.com.
