San Jose, Calif.----- A 26-7 surge over the last 7:30 of the first half propelled the San Jose State University men's basketball team to a 112-59 victory over Pacific Union College in an exhibition match for both teams.
Seven different Spartans scored after San Jose State held a 32-25 advantage. San Jose State, which shot 58.9 percent from the field, had a pair of double-digit leads before going on its extended rally to close out the first half with a 58-32 lead.
Spartan guard Gary Williams, Jr., in his debut led all players in scoring with 18 points. Four more San Jose State players, Jalen James with 17, Jaycee Hillsman, 15, Ryan Welage, 14, and Princeton Onwas, 12, would finish in double-figure scoring.
"I was pleased with the overall effort," said San Jose State head coach Dave Wojcik, whose team had 31 assists on 43 baskets. "Our players are very interchangeable and we can play different lineups."
For an exhibition game, the Spartans took good care of the ball with 10 turnovers compared to the Pioneers' 25. San Jose State converted those turnovers into 41 points.
San Jose State's biggest lead in the game was 56 points, 100-44, with 4:22 left in the second half.
Guard Jarron Crump led Pacific Union, a NAIA school located in Napa County's Angwin, Calif., in scoring with 17 points.
The Spartans open regular-season action, Saturday, November 14, hosting Idaho in a non-conference game at The Event Center in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
