San Jose, Calif. --- Frank Rogers notched his sixth double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds, but Utah State posted an 80-71 victory in the Mountain West opener for both teams at The Event Center."They played harder than us for a complete game," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "Especially in the first half. They were on the loose balls and hit timely shots. They were the more aggressive team on offense and defense. As I always tell the guys, usually the more aggressive team wins."The two teams went shot for shot throughout the first 14 minutes of the first half. Princeton Onwas' slam dunk at the 6:41 mark made it a two-point game, 23-21 Utah State lead. The Aggies' leading scorer Jalen Moore answered with a three, and Darius Perkins hit a jumper to extend the lead to seven. The lead grew to as many as 16 points, before San José State (5-8, 0-1 MW) kicked it into gear and went on an 11-2 run. Ryan Welage's three-ball at the 14:40 mark in the second half made it 49-45.But it was deja vu for the Spartans as Perkins and Moore both connected again on back-to-back threes. The buckets were the beginning of a 14-2 Utah State (9-3, 1-0 MW) run, during which SJSU was scoreless for 4:36."We made a run and we had energy at that point," Wojcik said. "And then they hit a timely three. Players make plays. It's a game of runs, and they made a strong run at us. Unfortunately we couldn't recover from that."Moore recorded a season-high with 21 points leading the Aggies to their fourth straight win and 17th consecutive over San José State. Grayson Moore with 12 and Perkins and Julion Pearre were in double-figure scoring with 11 each. Utah State's bench, paced by Pearre and Moore, outscored the San José State reserves, 29-13.It was the third time this season Rogers finished with 20 or more points for the Spartans. Cody Schwartz with 13 points and Ryan Welage with 11 points joined Rogers in double-figures scoring.Schwartz came in shooting better than 50 percent from beyond the arc in the last three games, but was just 2 for 8 from deep Wednesday night. The team finished 9 of 23 from downtown, while Utah State matched a season-high with 11 threes.San Jose State closes out the week at Air Force on January 2 in a 12:00 p.m. (MT) game.Newspaper Box Score
