Las Vegas, Nev. --- The San José State men's basketball team led by as many as 15 points late in the first half on the road at UNLV, but a string of costly turnovers and poor free throw shooting in the final minutes handed the Rebels a 64-61 win on Wednesday night.Brandon Clarke led all Spartans with 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. He caught a lob pass from Isaac Thornton midway through the first half and slammed it down to give SJSU a 23-11 lead. It was a significant play because it continued the team's momentum, but also because Clarke picked up a technical foul after the play. The 6-foot-9 forward would end up fouling out of the game with 1:21 remaining when it was tied, 58-58.Both teams lived at the foul line in the final four minutes, but that was after San José State (8-16, 3-9 MW) committed a string of six turnovers in a span of 2:25 beginning at the 7:47 mark. The Spartans committed 13 of 16 turnovers in the second half. With 5:38 left, Patrick McCaw's three-point shot from the right corner put UNLV (14-11, 5-7 MW) ahead 51-50, which was the first lead for the Rebels since 16:47 in the first half when it was 6-3.
Jerome Seagears hit a layup, and Derrick Jones, Jr., hit a free throw to give UNLV the 63-58 advantage with 38 seconds left. Welage hit a three with six second remaining which cut it back to 64-61. A desperation three by Cody Schwartz to tie the game at the end of regulation was waived off.
The Spartans ended up 14 of 26 from the line in the game, and 3 of 8 in the final four minutes. The Rebels were 7 of 10 from the stripe in the final four minutes.
UNLV scored the first six points on two straight threes, but it was a couple of threes by Ryan Welage which got the Spartans rolling on a 13-0 run. Princeton Onwas' layup with 3:13 left in the half gave the Spartans their largest lead of the contest.
Four Rebels finished in double figures, led by Patrick McCaw, with 16 points. Jones, Jr., finished with a double-double that included 14 points and 18 rebounds.Onwas with 13 points and Welage with 11, joined Clarke in double-figures for the Spartans. Frank Rogers grabbed 10 boards to go along with his seven points. The road trip continues Saturday when SJSU visits New Mexico and The Pit for a 4:00 p.m. (MT) tipoff on ROOT Sports.
