SAN JOSE, Calif. - One weekend after dropping its first two matches of the season, San José State's women's tennis team lost its first home match since 2014 with Friday's 4-3 loss to South Alabama at Spartan Courts.
The Spartans (4-3), ranked No. 60 in the country this week, were barely upended by No. 39 South Alabama (9-3), which also owns a 4-3 road win over No. 13 LSU just two weeks ago.
Friday, San José State got off to a good start with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 to capture the doubles point. At No. 1, Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey took down the Jaguars' tandem of Laura Valkova and Michaela Meszarosova, and Miyo Kobayashi and Justine Deleval toppled Alexandria Stiteler and Monica Mitta.
Kobayashi gave captured the Spartans' second point of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 doubles, but South Alabama rattled off four consecutive match to hand San José State its first home loss since April 11, 2014 - a span of nine matches.
Marie Klocker moved her singles record to 5-0 this spring with a three-set win at No. 2.
The Spartans are back in action Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against UC Davis.
