SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State's women's tennis team was topped by visiting Denver in a tight 4-3 match Thursday afternoon at Spartans Courts.
For San José State (6-4), the match was its first since in more than two weeks, and it could afford little rust against a Denver (12-2) squad that has been on a tremendous tear this spring.
The Pioneers opened the day by capturing the doubles point with 6-0 and 6-3 wins at the top two doubles spots.
In singles, Sybille Gauvain handed No. 78 Julia O'Loughlin just her second loss of the season with a 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 1. Marine Dans (No. 4) and Miyo Kobayashi (No. 5) also won points for San José State, but Denver got wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 6 to wrap up its fifth straight win.
With her three-set loss at No. 2, Marie Klocker dropped her first singles match this spring. The junior from Mulhouse, France, was 6-0 on the spring entering Thursday's match.
San José State returns to the courts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. to face UC Santa Barbara.
