Flagstaff, Ariz. --- Making the final round at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships for the first time, San Jose State sophomore Cari Reiswig finished 16th in the 1-meter springboard on the first day of competition at the Douglas J. Wall Aquatic Center.
"We're very proud of Cari's composure today," said the Spartans' diving coach Mark Butcher. "We are in one of the most difficult zones in the country and she competed well."
With a field of 58 divers from the Mountain West, Pac 12 and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Reiswig was one of 18 divers to make the cut for the final round. She placed 15th in the preliminary round with a score of 268.40 to advance.
The sophomore diver posted a score of 266.35 in the finals, missing an invitation to the NCAA Diving Championships by seven spots. Only the top nine finishers received an invite in the 1-meter. In her freshman season, Reiswig placed 35th in the 1-meter at the Zone Championships.
"Her performance today can only feed her competitive fire, especially with two additional spots up for grabs tomorrow," Butcher said.
Reiswig continues her hunt to advance to the NCAA Championships in the 3-meter springboard on Tuesday. The top 11 places in the final round move on to the next stage.
