April 1, 2016

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - San José State's women's tennis team gave undefeated UNLV as much as it could handle but eventually succumbed to the 52nd-ranked Rebels, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Friday's match marked the Spartans' (8-7, 0-1 MW) Mountain West opener, while UNLV (19-0, 3-0) was playing its third conference match of the spring.

The Rebels opened the day with consecutive wins at the top and bottom doubles spots to capture the first point of the morning. UNLV scored the first singles point as well, but Miyo Kobayashi got the Spartans on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5, advancing her spring record to 11-2. Gaelle Rey then handed Paola Artiga, previously 18-0, her first loss of the season with a three-set win after dropping the first.

The schools split the next two points, including a three-set win by Marie Klocker at No. 2, setting up a deciding match at No. 1 between No. 69 Carol Yang and Sybille Gauvain. Yang narrowly edged Gauvain, 7-6, in the first set before Gauvain responded with a 6-3 victory in the second to even it up. Yang went on to post a 6-3 victory in the third and final set, moving UNLV one step closer to a perfect season.

The Spartans travel to San Diego State to face the Aztecs in a 12:00 p.m. match on Sunday.
