GREELEY, Colo. - San José State's women's tennis team debuted at the 2016 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-1 win over Boise State on Friday morning at Work Out West.

With the quarterfinal win over the No. 5-seed Broncos (12-10, 4-2 MW), No. 4-seed San José State (12-9, 2-2 MW) advances to the semifinals and will take on either top-seeded Fresno State or No. 9-seed Utah State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MT/12:00 p.m. PT.

Due to inclement weather, Friday's match was played in the indoor courts at Work Out West in Greeley, Colo. All remaining matches this weekend will be played indoors.

The match got off to an ominous start for the Spartans, as Boise State captured the doubles point in roughly 20 minutes. No. 52 Marie Klocker and Sybille Gauvain suffered their first defeat of the season at the top spot, dropping a 6-1 decision to Hanna Kantenwein and Milena Toseva. Boise State also got a 6-2 win at the No. 3 slot to take the early lead.

San José State rebounded nicely in singles, though, winning at the top four spots to advance to Saturday's semifinals. Gaelle Rey got it started with a straight-set win at No. 3, and Gauvain, Klocker and Marine Dans followed up with three-set triumphs.

"We got off to a slow start in doubles, but we were able to regroup in singles. We won three three-setters and were able to stay focused and finish the job," said San José State head coach Chad Skorupka. "One key thing today was Gaelle Rey got off to a good start in singles after her doubles performance. Her winning in straight sets gave the rest of the team a lot of confidence."

The Spartans await the winner of Friday's 1:00 p.m. MT/12:00 p.m. PT match between Fresno State and Utah State, though the Bulldogs are heavily favored as the tournament's top seed.

"I told the girls we have nothing to lose tomorrow. Even though they're the top seed, Fresno State has to win the Mountain West Championship to get into the NCAA Tournament, so we'd love to be the spoiler. The pressure is on them, not us. Whoever we play tomorrow, we're looking forward to the battle."
