FORT COLLINS, Colo. - San José State's women's tennis team put up a good fight in Saturday's semifinal matchup with No. 47 Fresno State, but fell to the top-seeded Bulldogs, 4-2, at Fort Collins Country Club.
The Spartans finished their season at 12-10 overall and 2-2 in conference action. Fresno State improved to 19-8 on the campaign and advanced to Sunday's Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship, where they will take on the winner of UNLV and New Mexico.
Saturday, No. 51 Marie Klocker and Sybille Gauvain were on the brink of a doubles upset of No. 31 Mayer Sherif Ahmed and Rana Sherif Ahmed when the match was stopped because the Bulldogs had captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
The Sherif Ahmed sisters sealed the first two singles matches for Fresno State, putting them up 3-0 and one point away from playing in their second championship in the past three years. San José State did not go down easy, though, as Marie Klocker downed Sophie Watts in three sets at No. 2 and Marine Dans did the same to Galina Bykova at No. 4.
Sofya Malyesheva then put the Bulldogs over the top with a win at No. 6.
"Today was a tough loss for us. Early in our singles matches we didn't step up when we had the opportunities," said San José State head coach Chad Skorupka. "If you want to upset the top seed you need to be very aggressive, and we didn't take advantage."
