Tempe, Ariz.----- For the fifth consecutive year, the San Jose State University women's tennis team was honored for academic excellence by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Spartans were one of 700 men's and women's college programs from all levels of competition that met the ITA's standard of a 3.20 or above cumulative team grade point average on a 4.00 scale for an All-Academic Team award.
"The team shows they play at a high level of tennis at San Jose State and they take their academics seriously. This award shows that," says San Jose State University women's tennis coach Chad Skorupka, a member of the coaching staff since the 2012-13 season. Skorupka was promoted to head coach in July 2015.
Four Spartans, recent graduate Justine Deleval, seniors-to-be Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey, and sophomore-to-be Miyo Kobayashi, were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must be enrolled at the institution for at least two semesters, be a letter award winner and have a grade-point average of at least 3.50.
Klocker and Rey received the ITA Scholar-Athlete designation for the third season in a row. For Deleval, she received her second award.
In the last five years, the ITA recognized San Jose State University women's tennis players with 22 Scholar-Athlete national awards.
