Those marks rank 31st and 34th respectively in the country as of September 5. Individually, keeper Paige Simoneau (So., GK, Corona, Calif.) has a 0.652 goals against average which leads the MW as do her two shutouts. Dorthe Hoppius (Jr., F, Dorsten, Germany) leads the conference averaging 4.2 shots per match.SERIES HISTORY WITH CSUNSan José State leads the all-time series with CSUN 2-1 dating back to the first meeting in 1995. The Matadors beat the Spartans, 4-3, last season when the two teams met in San Jose. That match was San José State's last of the 2015 nonconference season. From there, SJSU won six of its first seven Mountain West Matches.LEADERS THROUGH FIVE MATCHESDorthe Hoppius currently leads the Spartans in almost every offensive category including: points (3), goals (1), shots (21) and shots on goal (8). Sabrina Miller (Jr., MF, Bakersfield, Calif.) and Alexis Venegas (Sr., MF, Van Nuys, Calif.) have also scored a goal in 2016. While the Spartans have some work to do in the scoring column, the defense is tops in the conference. Paige Simoneau's two shutouts lead the Mountain West, and freshman Ana Calero (Fr., GK, Watsonville, Calif.) has a shutout of her own. SJSU's three shutouts thus far has the team ranked 31st in the country with a .600 shutout percentage.BERKLEY & AMARIKWA ANCHOR A STINGY BACK LINEClaire Berkley (Jr., D, Pleasanton, Calif.) and Kristen Amarikwa (Fr., D, Bakersfield, Calif.) have played the most minutes for the Spartans in 2016 and are a big reason why San José State boasts the top defense in the Mountain West. Berkley is one of the more experienced players on the team and was an All-Mountain West Tournament team choice last season when SJSU won it all. Amarikwa on the other hand is a true freshman who has stepped right into the starting role. If the name sounds familiar, you may know her brother Quincy of the San Jose Quakes, now in his eighth Major League Soccer season.RETURNING HOMEThe Spartans will have played four straight away from their home field after Friday's match. The team returns to San Jose for two matches next week on Friday, September 16, against Montana and Sunday, September 18 versus Portland State.
