Stanford, Calif. - After not competing for four weeks, the San Jose State men's cross country team knocked off the rust with a fourth place finish at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday morning.
Head Coach Brad Wick's student-athletes had not competed since the San Francisco Invitational on September 3, but have used the time to good effect. At Stanford each of his seven runners lowered his time from the first competition: one by nearly a minute and a half.
The Spartans were led by senior Ben Branagh, who with a 20th place finish, in 24:07.5, cut 32.5 seconds off his time from the USF meet. Jose Pina came home just off Branagh's pace, in 24:14.7 (24th place) and improved his time by 43 seconds.
Josue Gonzalez was 33 seconds faster than four weeks ago with a 24:26.7 and finished in 35th place. Craig Huff was the most improved runner for the team. He ran a 26:03.4 at USF, but crossed the finish line at Stanford in 24:37.4 (46th place), slashing 1:26 off his previous time.
Raul Rodarte was 53rd in 24:48.4 and trimmed 1:15 off his season best. Huruy Zeratsion ran a 24:54.4 and 61st place. He was one minute faster at Stanford than at USF. Evaristo Mateo rounded out the squad with a 130th place finish in 26:34.2. His time was 22 seconds faster than his previous effort.
As a team, San José State picked up its second top-5 finish in as many competitions this year. Cal Poly was the winner with 54 points. Cal Poly Pomona (63 points), UC Santa Barbara (114 points), SJSU (132 points) and Saint Mary's (143 points) round out the top five.
