Billy Freeman Named To John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List

Oct. 12, 2016

New York, N.Y.----- For the third consecutive year, San Jose State University's Billy Freeman is named to the John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List.

The award honors the top tight end in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and is named after the Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end that revolutionized the way the position would be played. Mackey was best known as a Baltimore Colt in the 1960's. He also served his brethren as the first President of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA).

Through the first six games this season, Freeman has 12 receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns. He became the third tight end in San Jose State history to reach the 100-reception plateau in a career earlier in the season and his current 106 receptions are number two for tight ends at the school.

The 2015 John Mackey Award national semifinalist is one of 30 candidates and one of two from the Mountain West on this year's Midseason Watch List.

From the 30 on the Midseason Watch List, a list of semifinalists will be named on November 14. The finalists for this year's award will be announced on November 22. The winner will be presented December 8 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.
