Arevalo Leads Spartans At Stanford Intercollegiate

Stanford, Calif.-Abegail Arevalo led the Spartans with a 74 and the San José State women's golf team is 16th at 305 after the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course.

Arevalo is currently tied for 26th after shooting a three-over 74. She made birdies on #3 and #9, but also had three bogeys over the first nine to shoot a 36 after nine holes. Arevalo made bogeys on #10 and #14 and seven pars over her final nine holes.

My Leander is tied for 40th after shooting a four-over 75. Over her first nine holes, she made her only birdie on 37, two bogeys and six pars. Leander made three bogeys and six pars over the last nine holes.

Franziska Friedrich shot a five-over 76 and is tied for 50th. After shooting a four-over 39 during her first nine holes, she responded on holes 10-18 to shoot just one over with a birdie on #15, two bogeys and six pars.

Alexandra Cooper is tied for 77th at 80, while Elizabeth Schultz is tied for 80th with an 81.

"We got off to a poor start this morning," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We were missing a lot of fairways early. Our short games and birdie conversions were not up to the level of this tournament. We will have to play much better this weekend."

Northwestern, a playing partner of the Spartans on Friday, leads the field with a one-over 285. The tournament features 14 teams ranked in the top-50 of Golfstat and defending national champions Washington. UCLA is second at 287, while Arizona State is third at 291.

Individually, San Diego State golfer Georgia Lacey leads the field by two shots after shooting a four-under 67.

San José State begins second-round action Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. with UC Davis and San Francisco off of hole10.
