Sandoval's Fourth Place Finish Paces Spartans At Bronco Invite

Oct. 15, 2016

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Freshman Jennifer Sandoval crossed the finish line in fourth place to lead the San José State women's cross country team to a seventh-place finish in the 2016 Bronco Invitational at Baylands Regional Park on Saturday morning.

"We were solid in our top four spots today," said head coach Brad Wick, "but we need to find that fifth runner who can score for us to really make a leap in the standings. Our fifth runner was nearly a minute behind our fourth today. If that margin was cut to 15 seconds we would have come in third place."

Sandoval finished in 20:14.5, racked up her third top-10 finish in as many collegiate races and in the process recorded the fastest time of her brief career.

For the third straight race, Jeanette Zambrano was San José State's second runner to finish. Her 21:19.6 was good for 23rd place and is a season and career-best. Adilene Aldapa came home in 33rd place and in her fastest time of the year (21:30.2). Karina Nunes also set a season best stopping the clock in 21:43.3 and in 43rd place.

Camilla Hanson (22:45.8 and in 97th place) and Ashley Cahalan (22:48.3 and in 102nd place) were the next two Spartans to finish. Jessica Stacey (135th place in 23:42.0) and Elda Agular (143rd place in 24:02.4) rounded out the Spartan competitors.

"I think our best is yet to come," said Wick. "We'll start to ease back on our workouts and hope to close that fourth and fifth place gap. We have the people and talent to make a huge improvement at the Mountain West (Conference) and Regionals."
