San Jose, Calif. - Sophomore Jose Piña has been named the Mountain West Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 16. The announcement was made from the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Piña, a product of San Jose's Lincoln High School, led the Spartans to a first-place finish in both the Bronco Invitational and Santa Clara Duel last Saturday at the Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale, Calif.
He crossed the line in a time of 23:47.0, which was first in the duel scored against Santa Clara and placed sixth in the Bronco Invitational. It is the fastest 8k of his collegiate career and the first time he has run sub-24 minutes for the distance.
This is the first time Piña has been honored as Mountain West Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week and the Spartans first honor of the season.
San José State's next competition is at the Mountain West Championship on October 28 in Boise, Idaho.
