SARATOGA, Calif. -- The San José State men's water polo team came up big at the Rodeo Tournament by knocking off #14-George Washington and Navy.

"We played smarter and better today," said SJSU head coach Bruce Watson. "This was a good day for us."

The Spartans (6-13) claimed their first win over a top-15 ranked team this season by handing the #14-Colonials (10-7) a 12-7 defeat and came close to adding another before falling just short to #10-Brown (15-6), 8-5, in their third match of the day.

"We were a little worn down in our last match," said Watson. "We got bullied a little bit but we'll correct that. It's all a part of our learning process."

The Spartans won their first match of the day, defeating Navy (6-12), 14-7.

SJSU is currently playing their best water polo of the season, winning their last four out of six matches.

Top goal scorers on the day for the Spartans were Marc Weber, seven, and Finn Pardon, six. Weber notched all seven of his goals over two games - Navy and #14-George Washington. Pardon has now scored 15 goals in his last six games.

The Spartans return to the pool to take on St. Francis Brooklyn at 9:20 a.m. and Johns Hopkins at 2:20 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, October 23.
