El Paso, Texas--- San José State University's Matthew Ashley and Sean Talmadge are in the top-10 individually with five birdies at two-under par 70 after the first round at Price's Give 'Em Five Men's Golf Invitational.
The individual scores did not count toward the team score of 12-over par 300. The Spartans are tied for eighth place playing on the par 72 7,307-yard Butterfield Trail Golf Club.
In team scoring Scott Munger and Matthew Murray were the leaders for the Spartans. The golf team is led by Scott Munger who is tied for 24th on the day with an even par 72 and has the third most pars in the tournament with 14. Matthew Murray tied for 34th shot three birdies on the back nine to finish with a two-over par 74.
Kevin Velo and William Barnett both shot five-over par 77 to tie for 55th on the tournament. William Barnett capped off the day with two birdies on the last two holes.
Charles Thompson is tied for 66th with a final score on round one of the tournament of seven over par 79.
Although not contributing to the Spartans team score Henrik Sohlberg is tied for 55th shooting five over with a total score of 77.
Host UTEP is leading the tournament by four strokes with a 12-under par 276. Zander Lozano from UTSA and Andres Sorenson from UTEP are leading the tournament with a six-under 66. UTEP has three of the top 4 scores in round one of the tournament.
