El Paso, Texas---The San José State University men's golf team finished their Fall tournaments for the first half of the 2016-17 schedule at Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational by placing in ninth with a final score of 16-over par 880.
The Spartans shot a five-over 293 in the third and final round at the par-72, 7,307-yard Butterfield Trail Golf Club.
Individually, not counting toward the team score, Matthew Ashley tied for 17th after finishing off his final round at one-under par 215. He shot 13 pars to finish at one-over par 73 on the final day to hold onto his first career top 20 finish.
Also competing individually was Sean Talmadge and Henrik Sohlberg. Sean Talmadge records his best finish as a Spartan tied for 29th place with a two-over par 218. Henrik Sohlberg also had his best career finish as a Spartan tied for 44th shooting seven-over par 223.
Leading team scoring for San José State was Scott Munger and Matthew Murray who both tied for 24th place at one-over par 217. In the final round Scott Munger shot 11 pars to finish two over par 74. Matthew Murray goes low for the Spartans and caps off the first portion of his season with an eagle on the final hole of the course to shoot even par 72 on the final day of the tournament.
Kevin Velo finished round three with a score of three-over par 75. He tied for 39th with a score of five-over par 221.
Charles Thompson finished in 63rd at 13-over 229 shooting a 74 in the final round. William Barnett bounced back and had his best round of the tournament with a score of one-over par 73. He finished in 66th at 17-over par 233.
Finishing in first in the Tournament was host UTEP with a total score of 35-under par 829. Leading the player leaderboard was Zander Lozano from UTSA who shot 14-under 202 to win the tournament by two strokes.
