Monterey Park, Calif.----- Two fifth-place relay finishes, Taylor Solorio's eighth-place finish in the 50 free and Colleen Humel's sub 5:00 swim in the 500 freestyle were some of the highlights for San Jose State University on the first day of the A3 Performance Invitational women's swimming meet.

After five events, San Jose State is in fifth place in the 10-team standings with 180.5 points. UCLA is the team leader at 427.5. Hawaii at 296 and San Diego State at 286 round out the top three teams.

Solorio had San Jose State's best individual finish and was the only Spartan in a championship final. She swam a qualifying time of 23.46 and followed up with a 23.63 in the final.

Humel had a busy first day swimming in three of the five events. She swam the leadoff leg on both fifth-place finishing relay teams and moved into #7 on the all-time San Jose State list in the 500 free with her career best of 4:57.56. Her previous best was 4:58.73 at the 2016 Mountain West Championships.

Freshman Jenna Lloyd in the 200 individual medley and Brittany Heng and Antoinette Loya in the 50 free swam in the B finals for their respective events and to score for the Spartans.

"We are really pleased with today's performance. Tomorrow is a very strong day for us, and we are really excited to get after it in the morning," says San Jose State women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins. "We are also really looking forward to our divers' first day of competition in Flagstaff (at the Lumberjack Invitational) tomorrow. "

The Spartans have entries in all five events on the second of three days at the A3 Performance Invitational -- 400 individual medley, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back.

Kylie Fonseca, Megan Au, Eri Tamada and Natasha Sondeno are the San Jose State divers at the Lumberjack Invitational. The 1-meter and platform events take place on November 18.
