Series history: Fresno State leads the series, 40-36-3. The two teams first played in 1921 and San José State went home with a 14-2 victory. The Spartans' have more games against the Bulldogs (79) than any other opponent.
San José State has wins in three of the last four games including a 49-23 victory in San José last season. The Bulldogs' last win in the series was a 38-24 triumph in Fresno on November 8, 2014.
The Spartans' last win in Fresno was a 27-24 victory on November 26, 2011. That game was San José State's first win in Fresno since 1987.
This year's game marks the second time these teams are facing each on a November 26 date and the 16th time San José State is concluding a regular season playing Fresno State. The Spartans are 3-12 in final regular season games against Fresno State. The wins came in 1990 when San José State captured the Big West Conference championship, 42-7; 2011, the last time the Spartans won in Fresno; and 2013 in a 62-52 triumph over #16-ranked Fresno State.
Valley Trophy: Since 2013, San José State and Fresno State play for the Valley Trophy. San José State is the metropolitan capital of the high-tech Silicon Valley. Fresno State is the largest city in the agriculturally-rich San Joaquin Valley. The two schools are separated by approximately 150 driving miles.
Closing a regular season in the win column: The 2013 win over #16-Fresno State, 62-52, was the last time San José State concluded a regular season with a victory. The last time the Spartans ended a season with a road win was the November 26, 2011 victory in Bulldog Stadium, 27-24.
One more chance for a 2016 road triumph: San José State heads to Fresno State with an 0-5 road record this season. The Spartans have at least one road win in every season since 2011. In 2010, San José State played four top-25 ranked on the road and was 0-7 away from home at the end of the season.
Back to Fresno: San José State running backs coach Phil Earley was an assistant coach at Fresno State during the 2012 through 2015 seasons. Starting cornerback Andre Chachere and reserve defensive back Dehlon Preston call Fresno home. Chachere came to San José State from Clovis West High. Preston graduated from Central High.
Scoring in the 30's: For the first time since the 2013 season, San José State has a three-game streak scoring 30 or more points in a game. The Spartans defeated UNLV, 30-24, lost at #24-ranked Boise State, 45-31, and to Air Force, 41-38. The last time San José State scored at least 30 points in a game four consecutive outings was in games five through nine in the 2013 season.
Bryce Crawford up to eight in a row: San José State sophomore Bryce Crawford is 8-for-8 and 13-of-15 for the season kicking field goals. Austin Lopez, at 17-for-17 in 2012, is the last Spartan to convert at least eight field goal tries in a row in a season.
Potter tops Spartans in TDs: Quarterback Kenny Potter could become the first San José State quarterback since Roger Proffitt in 1975 to lead or share the team lead for touchdowns scored in a season. Potter presently leads the Spartans with seven touchdowns scored. Teammates Tre Hartley, Zamore Zigler and Tim Crawley have four each. Proffitt and running back Rick Kane each scored seven touchdowns in 1975.
