Bakersfield, Calif.----- San Jose State University's women's swimmers and divers finished first in seven of 13 events as the Spartans defeated CSU Bakersfield, 132-111, in a non-conference dual meet.
Senior Taylor Solorio, competing in her hometown, and junior Colleen Humel were double-event winners for the Spartans (3-1). Solorio finished first in the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints with times of 24.22 and 52.19, respectively. Humel touched first in the 100 back at 57.93 and the 200 free in 1:55.50.
Freshman Violani Auva'a was San Jose State's other individual event winner taking first in the 100 fly with a time of 58.17. The Spartans also won both relay races -- the 200 medley and 400 free. Humel and Solorio swam the first two legs of the 200 medley relay for the victorious Spartans.
"I'm very happy with our performance overall today," said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins. "Violani Auva'a and Taylor Solorio performed very well."
The Spartans' head coach also singled out diver Kylie Fonseca. The junior from Gilbert, Ariz., finished second in the 1 and 3-meter diving events, but more importantly had NCAA Zone Championship qualifying scores of 277.95 in the 1-meter and 290.95 in the 3-meter dives. The NCAA Zone Championships are in March 2017. Fonseca qualified for the Zone Championships last year in the 1-meter, but did not compete due to a season-ending injury.
The Spartans now head to UC- San Diego two meet. On January 2, San Jose State competes against Mountain West members Air Force, Boise State and San Diego State and non-conference opponents Incarnate Word and host UC San Diego in an invitational-style scoring meet starting at 2:00 p.m. The next day, the Spartans take on San Diego State, Rice and UC San Diego in a dual-meet scoring starting at noon.
