BAIRD HAS A DAY ON THE BOARDS
Paris Baird (Sr., F, Van Nuys, Calif.), had by far the best rebounding game of her career, grabbing 19 rebounds at Colorado State (1/4). It more than doubled her previous career-high of 9 and was two boards from equaling the single-game record of Rhoda Chew, who twice in her career ripped down 21 rebounds in a game.
DEZZ CAN FILL IT UP
With a 34-point outburst at Colorado State after a 40-point game against Nevada, Dezz Ramos (Sr., PG, West Valley, Utah) has two back-to-back 30-point efforts this season and a program record total of five 30+-point games in her Spartans career. In addition, she is the only player in Spartans history to have multiple back-to-back 30+-point games. Hulett Brooks (32 & 31 points on 12/29 & 12/30/03) and Lora Alexander (30 & 33 points on 2/22 & 2/24/90) accomplished the feat once in their careers.
RAMOS SELECTED MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK
In SJSU's 107-84 win over the Nevada Wolf Pack (12/29), senior point guard Dezz Ramos scored 40 points, had eight assists and got five steals, one of the best games in SJSU women's basketball history. For that performance she was selected the Mountain West Player of the Week.
The 40 points are a career-high and was a point from equaling the program's single-game record of 41, set by Hulett Brooks against Sacramento State on December 10, 1993. She shot 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the field, including 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from beyond the three-point line and was 6-for-6 from the line. Her eight assists led to 20 points and the team scored 10 points off her five steals.
She joins Brooks as the only Spartans in the 43-year history of the program to score 40 points in a game. In addition, her total ties for the second most by a Mountain West player in a conference game since the conference's inception in 1999. The Spartans 107 points ties the record for points by one team in a MW conference game.
SMITH MOVES INTO 14TH PLACE AFTER BECOMING 15TH SPARTAN TO SCORE 1,000 POINTS
On a three-point play in the first quarter of the team's game against Nevada (12/29), Jasmine Smith (Sr., F, Burbank, Calif.) became the 15th player in the history of San José State women's basketball to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Finishing the Nevada game with 18 points, Smith had 1,011 for her career, and with 13 at Colorado State, she moved past Lora Alexander (1,019 pts., 1989-90) for 14th place. She enters the Fresno State game with 1,024 points, 11 from passing Riana Byrd (1,034 pts.., 2013-16) for 13th place all-time.
DEZZ COULD GET TO 1,000 POINTS AS A SPARTAN AS WELL
Senior Dezz Ramos (Sr., PG, West Valley, Utah) was the second-leading scorer in the Mountain West last season averaging 18.1 points per game and this season has up that to 21.6 through the first 14 games. She has scored 829 points in 43 games as a Spartans and is on pace to become just the second SJSU women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in her first two seasons. If she stays at her current scoring pace, she will reach 1,000 points in eight more games, a total of 51 games. She would join SJSU Hall of Famer Lora Alexander as the only Spartan to accomplish the feat. Alexander scored 1,019 points in 56 games.
MORE ON JASMINE
Now that she has passed 1,000-points scored for her career, Jasmine Smith (Sr., F, Burbank, Calif.) is on pace to join an even more exclusive club. With 690 career rebounds, Smith is just 10 from becoming the fifth player to wear the Gold, White and Blue and to have scored 1,000 points and grabbed 700 rebounds. She would join Elinor Banks (1,672 pts./1,062 rebs.), Lamisha Augustine (1,226 pts./700 rebs.), Rhoda Chew (1,188 pts./946 rebs.) and Riana Byrd (1,034 pts./1,038 rebs.) as the only Spartans to reach the milestone.
POY WATCH...WHY NOT!
It is way to early to start MW Player of the Year talk, but...we're doing it anyway! Dezz Ramos (Sr., PG, West Valley, Utah) is showing everyone just how dominant a player can be from the point guard position. Entering the game against Fresno State she is #1 in scoring (37.0), 3-pt FG (5.5), #2 in steals (3.0), #3 in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2:1), #4 in assists (5.5), #8 in FT% (.846) and #12 in FG% (.464).
