Women's Water Polo Heads To Barbara Kalbus Invitational

Feb. 22, 2017

Looking for its first winning streak of the season, San Jose State University is one of 16 teams in the annual Barbara Kalbus Invitational women's water polo tournament, February 24-26.

Formerly known as the UC Irvine Invitational, the tournament covers three days at the UC Irvine Aquatics Center and at Corona del Mar Pool in nearby Newport Beach and features nine of the top-10 ranked teams in the country.

The #17-ranked Spartans (4-8) open against #4-California (10-1) in a February 24 match at 1:45 p.m. at the UC Irvine Aquatics Center. The teams are meeting for the third time this season. Cal has a pair of nine-goal non-conference wins over San Jose State this season.

San Jose State's second match will be against either #5-Arizona State (6-1) or #15-Long Beach State (4-4). The Spartans lost to the 49ers, 9-8 in overtime, at the Cal Speedo Cup on January 28.

Most recently, San Jose State defeated Occidental, 20-3, to close out the 37th annual Aggie Shootout hosted by UC Davis. Sheila Jensen, with a career-best five goals, and Kathryn Elgin, with four, led the way offensively for the Spartans in their highest scoring match of the season.

Carla Toha Vilanova remains the team's leading scorer with 18 goals in nine matches. Jensen is next with 12. Donia Momen and Klaudia Paradi have 10 each.

Goalkeeper Katelynn Thompson had a season-high 13 saves in her last match, a 9-6 loss to #11-Pacific.
