Women's Water Polo Loses To #4-Cal, 13-6, At Barbara Kalbus Invitational

Feb. 24, 2017

Irvine, Calif.----- A six-goal third quarter propelled the University of California to a 13-6 win over San Jose State in a women's water polo match in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational first round contest.

#17-San Jose State (4-9) led, 2-1, but #4-Cal (11-1) scored nine consecutive goals from the end of the first quarter until deep in the third. Cal's third win over the Spartans this season was by seven goals compared to nine in each of the previous two triumphs.

"We came out strong and had a 2-1 lead. We played some great defense for 30 seconds, but didn't finish (defensively on) some of their possessions," said San Jose State head coach Gabor Sarusi.

"They leveraged our mistakes. Cal is a team that can punish you for your mistakes," Sarusi added. Cal scored four power-play goals during their nine unanswered goal-spurt.

Donia Momen scored two fourth-quarter power-play goals to lead San Jose State in scoring. Klaudia Paradi, Carla Toha Vilanova, Molly Kaster and Sierra Painter also scored for the Spartans.

Katelynn Thompson played the first three quarters and was credited with four saves. Tayler Peters played the fourth quarter as San Jose State's goalkeeper and made two saves.

San Jose State takes on #15-Long Beach State in a February 25 tournament match at the Corona del Mar pool in Newport Beach, Calif.
