STOCKTON, Calif. - The San Jose State University baseball team played their fifth game in five days in Stockton against the University of Michigan and lost 6-2 on Monday night.
In what was supposed to be their opening home stand week, the Spartans once again traveled 80 miles from campus to Banner Island Ballpark to play under drier conditions. While the Spartans won three of the first four games in Stockton, SJSU was sluggish against the Wolverines committing a season high three errors.
Freshman Jeremy Polon made his first career Spartan start and got off to a solid start, striking out the side in the first inning.
However, Polon ran into issues in the second after issuing a pair of walks sandwiching a balk, wild pitch and a single to eventually be knocked out after 1 2/3 innings (2 H, 3 R, 2 BB).
Jake Swiech, who started last Thursday, came in relief but by the time the inning was over, the damage was done to the tune of 4-0 deficit after the top half of the second.
The Spartans got one run back in the bottom of the second when Justin Beck (1-for-3, RBI) singled in Joseph Stefanki (2-for-4, R) but gave that run back when Michigan's Michael Brdar hit a solo shot in the top of the third.
Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the third, the Spartans cut into the Michigan lead when Kellen Strahm (3-for-4, R) and David Campbell (1-for-4) singled to start the inning, followed by a Chris Williams (1-for-4, RBI) to drive in Strahm, to trail by three runs.
The game remained 5-2 until the ninth when Michigan's Harrison Wenson hit a home run for the final 6-2 margin. Polon (0-1) took the loss for the Spartans while Michigan starter Alex Rennard (1-0) was credited with the win.
San Jose State utilized 10 pitchers in the game, with none of them pitching more than 1 2/3 innings. Eric Anderson and Hilario Tovar made their season debuts, each pitching an inning of shutout ball.
The Spartans tied their season-high hit total of 10 with Strahm leading the way with three hits but were held to two runs or less for the fourth time this season.
The Spartans fell to 3-4 for the season while the Wolverines improved to 6-2. SJSU hopes to have its home opener this Friday, March 3 when they take on UNLV. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT.
