Tucson, Ariz. --- The San Jose State University men's golf team is tied for 13th after they finished 36 holes in one day at the National Invitational Tournament.
The Spartans have a two-day team score of 15-over par 591 on the par-72, 7,200 yard Omni Tucson National Golf Course. In the first round of the tournament the Spartans played poorly. They tied for 14th place shooting a 15-over par 303. In round 2, the Spartans played significantly better shooting even par on the day with a score of 288.
"They started playing the game, and really stepped up when they needed to," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday, "I felt like we were close to breaking through."
Kevin Velo, and Matthew Murray are the top Spartans individually heading into the final 18 holes. They are tied for 36th place with a two-over par, and two day scores of 146. Kevin Velo had the best round on the day going two-under par, and carding an eagle with four birdies.
Tied at 41st is Scott Munger who shot par in round two. He has a two day score of three-over par 147.
Sean Talmadge is tied at 70th place shooting eight-over par 152 after two rounds. Tied in 82nd is Will Barnett who shot one-over par in round two to give himself a two-day score of 12-over par of 156.
Competing individually and not counting toward the team score was Matthew Ashley who shot 15-over 159.
The National Invitational Tournament features a 16 team field including: San José State University, Arizona State, Iowa State, UNLV, Arizona, Texas El Paso, Brigham Young, San Francisco, Colorado State, Notre Dame, Santa Clara, Utah, University of Wyoming, New Mexico State, Princeton, and Nevada.
On top of the leaderboard in team scoring was Iowa State who has a two-day score of 549 and shot 27-under par. Iowa State is currently ahead of second place Arizona State by one stroke.
On top of the player's leaderboard at 10-under par there is a three way tie between Nick Voke (Iowa State), Shintaro Ban (UNLV), and Harry Hall (UNLV).
