Waikoloa, Hawaii --- The San José State University men's golf team finished round two of the Amer Ari Invitational at Waikoloa Kings Course Friday in 14th place with a final score of one-over par 289, and a total two-day score of five-over par 581.
Spartans head coach John Kennaday, "We have a good group of guys. It was a tough fight, but we finished better. Kevin was very resourceful today, and he put up a heck of a number."
Sophomore Kevin Velo went low in round two, and ended his day with seven birdies. Tied for 19th place, Velo shot his lowest round of the season with a five-under par 67. He has a total two-day score of five-under 139. Spartans Head coach John Kennaday, "He made good decisions. The practice in the short game over the offseason worked, and is having an effect."
Tied at four-over par 79th is Sean Talmadge and William Barnett. Sean Talmadge started slow, but turned it around and caught fire on the back nine with five birdies. Talmadge finished his second round with an even par 72, and along with Barnett has a total two-day score of four over par 148. Coach Kennaday on Talmadge's turn around, "he started playing Spartan golf."
Matthew Murray fell in round two after he shot a seven-over par 79. He has a total score of six-over par 150.
Scott Munger is currently tied for 113th, and has a two-day total of 155 after shooting a 75 in round two.
Leading the tournament is USC at 35-under par with a total score of 541. Close second is Texas Tech who is a stroke behind USC at 34-under par.
Rico Hoey from USC is on top of the player's leaderboard with a score of 14-under par 130. He currently has a three stroke lead over second place Fredrik Nilehn of Texas Tech and Ethan Freeman of Colorado.
