DEZZ 11 POINTS FROM 1,000 AS A SPARTAN & WILL BE QUICKEST TO THE MILESTONE
SeniorDezz Ramos (Sr., PG, West Valley, Utah) was the second-leading scorer in the Mountain West last season averaging 18.1 points per game and this season has up that to 22.0 through the first 21 games. She has scored 989 points in 50 games as a Spartans and is on pace to become just the second SJSU women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in her first two seasons. If she stays at her current scoring pace, she will reach 1,000 points in tonight, an overall total of 51 games. She would join SJSU Hall of Famer Lora Alexander as the only Spartan to accomplish the feat. Alexander passed 1,000-career points in her 55th game and finished her career with 1,019 points in 56 games.
CRAIGHEAD THREE WINS FROM 100
With three more victories, head coach Jamie Craighead will reach the 100-win career plateau. It will be her 49th win at SJSU tying her with Karen Smith (1993-99) for third place on the program all-time wins list. The late Janice Richard (1999-2006) ranks second with 93 wins and Sharon Chatman (1977-86), with 143 victories, is the all-time leader in victories and is the only coach in SJSU women's basketball with a winning record (143-121/.542).
STABLE STARTERS
Through 21 games, San José State has used exactly one starting lineup and those five are also the five leading scorers on the team. The five are Myzhanique Ladd (Jr., G, Seattle, Wash.), Paris Baird (Sr., F, Van Nuys, Calif.), Jasmine Smith (Sr., F, Burbank, Calif.), Rachol West (Sr., G, Bakersfield, Calif.) & Dezz Ramos (Sr., PG, West Valley, Utah). In a survey of Division I programs, only Syracuse and Saint Louis University responded as starting line up all year and having those five players as the five top-scorers on the team.
RAMOS AMONG THE SCORING ELITE AT SJSU, IN THE MW AND THE NATION
With her 31-point effort in the Spartans 86-74 victory over Air Force (1/14), her sixth of the season and seventh of her Spartans' career, Dezz Ramos (Sr., PG, West Valley, Utah) ranks second on the MW list of single-season 30+ point games and first on the SJSU single-season and career lists. Through nine MW games her 26.0 ppg is eight points higher than Wyoming's Liv Roberts' 18.0 ppg, who is in second place. Nationally, Ramos ranks tenth in total points (463) and ninth points per game (22.0).
After competing in her 50th game as a Spartans in the team's 76-65 victory at UNLV, she has reached the minimum requirement for the program's career lists. She now ranked first in scoring average (19.8/g), 16th in points (989), 19th in field goals (340), 20th in field goal attempts (867), 9th in 3-point field goals (109), 10th in 3-point field goal attempts (320), 5th 3-point percentage (.341), 17th in free throws (200), second in free throw percentage (.858), and 14th in assists (224).
TWO...IT'S A MAGIC NUMBER
When Dezz Ramos (Sr., PG, West Valley, Utah) reaches 1,000-career points as a Spartan, she is 11 shy of the milestone heading into the game against New Mexico, she will be the second SJSU player reach the plateau this season. Jasmine Smith (Sr., F, Burbank, Calif.) passed 1,000-career points against Nevada (12/29) and it will be the second time in San José State women's basketball history that two players reach the 1,000-point benchmark in the same season. Hall of Famer members Karen Mason (1978-81) and Elinor Banks (1978-81) both reach 1,000 points in the 1979-80 season.
THAT DESERVES A WOW!
In very short order, San Joszé State will have four players, in four years, surpass a 1,000-point milestone...FIVE TIMES! Dezz Ramos (Sr., PG, West Valley, Utah) is 11 points away; Jasmine Smith (Sr., F, Burbank, Calif.) reached the milestone against Nevada (12/29); Riana Byrd (2013-16) scored her 1,000th last season and Ta'Rea Cunnigan (2012-15) scored her 2,000th-career point in 2014-15 and passed 1,000-career points in 2013-14.
