ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Spartans allowed 19 hits, including four home runs, to lose to New Mexico, 11-1, in their Mountain West conference road opener on Friday night.
The Lobos remain undefeated in conference play 4-0 and are 9-3 overall. Spartans dropped to 2-2 in Mountain West play and 6-6 overall.
San Jose State starter Josh Nashed, who came into the game with a 1.59 ERA over 17 innings, was hit early and hard by the potent Lobos offense, batting .335 for the season.
New Mexico centerfielder Luis Gonzalez led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and the Lobos never looked back scoring six runs on eight hits while sending 10 batters in the opening frame.
While Nashed settled down to blank the Lobos in the second and third innings, the New Mexico bats struck again in the fourth with two home runs, including a second homer by Gonzalez.
Nashed was pulled out after 4 1/3 innings allowing a career-high 14 hits and 10 earned runs.
The Spartans mustered just four hits. Joseph Stefanki and Kellen Strahm each extended their hit streaks to nine games with a single.
Corey Olivet had the lone extra base hit, a double, for the Spartans, driving in Stefanki in the top half of the second, for SJSU's lone run of the night.
Justin Beck collected a hit for SJSU in the eighth off of Lobos starter Tyler Stevens, who had retired 13 Spartans in a row up to that point. Stevens finished with a complete game win to move to 2-1 on the season. Nashed (0-1) lost his first game of season.
The Spartans look to get their first win on the road this season on Saturday in game two of the series. Matt Brown (1-2, 4.80) will take the mound for the Spartans against Jonathan Tripp (1-1, 5.62). First pitch is 2:00 p.m. MT.
