Monterey, Calif.-- The San José State beach volleyball went 2-1 at the first day of the Monterey Invitational, defeating San Francisco, 5-0 and Portland, 5-0, but falling to #3 UCLA, 5-0.

In the opening dual of the day, the Spartans swept San Francisco as every pair won in two sets. SJSU then faced #3 UCLA and were swept 5-0.

San José State then faced Portland in the final dual of the day and won 5-0. Allison Meehan and Lyndi Scholl swept their match, 21-15, 23-21; and Summer Avery and Kaitlynn Zdroik, in the fifth position, won in straight sets, 21-8, 21-12.

The other three Spartan pairs needed three sets to win. Julie Sam and Nandyala Gama won 12-21, 21-19, 15-12; while Julia Golbeck and Luiza Andrade won 21-17, 19-21, 15-11. Jamie Hirai and Giulia Gávio won their match 19-21, 21-11, 15-9.

"I am very proud of how our players handles our home tournament in most aspects of our play today. We earned a solid victory against USF this morning," said Spartan head coach Aaron Shepardson. "Ali and Lyndi played very smart and steady volleyball under great pressure from their 1s team to come out on top.

"We gave UCLA our best effort and put some pressure on them by using the wind to our advantage. We must learn from our opponents on how they make very few unforced errors.

"We saved our best performance for Portland. Nandyala and Julie came up with a huge character win after losing the first set. Our second, third and fourth pairs all went to three sets, but I feel we were able to out-work our opponents to earn those wins."

The Spartans play just one match Saturday at the Monterey Invitational - vs. Grand Canyon at 3 p.m. Four other matches wil be played during the day - UCLA vs. Grand Canyon, 9 a.m.; Portland vs. Saint Mary's, 10 a.m.; Grand Canyon vs. Portland, 12 p.m.; and UCLA vs. Saint Mary's, 1 p.m.
