Los Angeles, Calif.----- Carla Toha Vilanova scored two first-half goals for San Jose State University, but the University of Southern California won its NCAA-record 50th consecutive match in a 19-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo match.
Toha Vilanova's second score pulled the #14-ranked Spartans (9-14, 0-2 MPSF) to 7-3 with 2:31 remaining before halftime, but the #1-ranked Trojans (24-0, 2-0 MPSF) closed out the half with three unanswered goals for a 10-3 halftime lead.
Jacqui Maisey accounted for San Jose State's other goal, the team's first of the match to close the Spartans' scoring against their 10th top-10 opponent of the season. San Jose State now is 1-9 against top-10 teams.
"We played a good quarter-and-a-half, then we started making too many mistakes," said San Jose State head coach Gabor Sarusi.
Brigitta Games led all players with a single-match career best seven goals, five of them in the first half. Stephania Haralabidis, the conference's leading scorer now with 67 goals, scored four times including the final first-half goal with 0:01 before halftime.
Tayler Peters started in goal for the Spartans and was credited with two saves. Katelynn Thompson was the San Jose State goalkeeper in the second half. She made three saves and allowed nine goals.
