Saratoga, Calif.----- Five UCLA players scored three or more goals as the #3-ranked Bruins defeated #10-ranked San Jose State, 24-2, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo opener for both teams.

Alexa Tielmann and Maddie Musselman each scored four and Kelsey O'Brien, Aubrie Monahan and Bronte Halligan each had three goals as UCLA (12-1, 1-0 MPSF) scored its team season high and hit the 20-goal mark for the third time this season.

Donia Momen and Klaudia Paradi scored San Jose State's two goals, both in the fourth quarter in the second meeting between these teams. UCLA won the first meeting, 20-1, at the LouStrong Invitational in January.

"We were not ready for this level (of play) mentally. We didn't come out with the required intensity to do well against a really good team like UCLA and it showed," said San Jose State head coach Gabor Sarusi.

UCLA took full advantage of power play opportunities converting 7-of-9 chances and tacked on a 5-meter penalty shot goal, too. San Jose State (6-11, 0-1 MPSF) was 0-of-7 when it was on the power play.

Katelynn Thompson played the first in goal for San Jose State and was credited with five saves. Tayler Peters played the second half and had one save. UCLA goalkeepers Carlee Kapana and Hannah Storum combined for 10 saves.

"San Jose State is a team that is rapidly improving. For us to hold them to two goals was solid. I appreciate our consistency with our effort defensively," said UCLA head coach Brandon Brooks, whose team recorded its seventh win of the season yielding two or fewer goals in match.

San Jose State returns to action the weekend of March 11 & 12 at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State. The Spartans play Indiana and San Diego State on March 11 and Wagner and Whittier on March 12.
