SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose State University baseball team lost 7-1 to UNLV in the second game of the Mountain West conference opening series on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans are now 4-5 overall and UNLV improved to 5-6 overall, setting up the rubber match on Sunday.

The Spartans scored first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Joseph Stefanki (1-for-4, RBI), driving in Kellen Strahm (2-for-4, R) who led off the inning with a single.

For both Strahm and Stefanki, it extended their hitting streaks to seven and six games, respectively, and helped raise Strahm's team leading batting average to .353.

Spartans starting pitcher Matt Brown allowed the leadoff batter to get onboard in four of the five innings he pitched, including escaping a bases loaded, no-out situation in the third inning. However, it caught up with the junior hurler in the fifth inning.

In the top half of the fifth, holding onto a 1-0 Spartans lead, Brown allowed three hits, including a leadoff single to Bryson Stott, who came into the game batting .444 on the season. Brown also allow a pair of doubles to Nick Ames and Max Smith. Smith's double drove in two runs to put the Rebels up 3-1, knocking Brown out of the game.

The Rebels added four more runs in the sixth against Spartan relievers Jake Swiech and Zach Wallace.

For the game, the SJSU pitchers walked eight batters and one hit batter, against the Rebels squad that came into the game batting .314.

UNLV starter Larry Quaney went the distance pitching a complete game, allowing eight hits, striking out three and not allowing a walk. Quaney picked up his first win of the season and Brown dropped his record to 1-2.

Sunday's season finale will feature a pair of southpaws with Garrett Poole (1-1, 2.25) going for the Rebels against San Jose State's Graham Gomez (0-0, 0.00 in 6 1/3 IP). First pitch is 1:00 p.m. PT.
