San Jose, Calif.-The San José State beach volleyball team swept San Francisco, 5-0, Saturday afternoon in Santa Cruz in the team's first win over the Dons in school history.
Four of the five Spartan duals recorded sweeps in their matches. Lyndi Scholl and Allison Meehan won 21-11, 21-14 in the number-one position.
In the number-two position, Julie Sam and Nandyala Gama were the only pair to go three sets, winning the first 21-13, falling 21-12 in the second set but rebounding to win 15-9.
The final three Spartan pairs were victorious in two sets - Luiza Andrade and Julie Golbeck 21-15, 21-11 in the third position; Jamie Hirai and Giulia Gávio 21-14, 21-10 in the fourth spot, and Summer Avery and Kaitlynn Zdroik 21-7, 21-6 in the fifth position.
The Spartans also defeated Feather River, 5-0, in an exhibition dual.
"I was pleased with our ability to physically outwork our opponents to earn the victories," said Spartan head coach Aaron Shepardson. "While USF is building their program and Feather River is a well-established two-year program, it was great to see us have the competitive maturity to respect our opponents and bring great energy to the duals. Our goal is to always compete and support each other with the same energy regardless of our opponent."
San Jose State competes this Saturday, March 11, at the Livermore Community Park in Folsom, Calif. The team plays Boise State at 10 a.m., followed by Sacramento State at 1 p.m.
