Final Stats - USC Match Final Stats - Saint Mary's Match
Monterey, Calif.--The San José State beach volleyball team played two tough matches on Sunday as the Spartans fell to #1 USC, 5-0, and Saint Mary's, 3-2.
Against the defending national champions, all five Spartan pairs were swept. Summer Avery and Jamie Hirai were the closest to winning a set, falling in their first set 21-19, followed by 21-15.
The Spartans then battled with Saint Mary's. The teams split the first two matches of the day, with thethe Spartans winning at the #5 spot with Summer Avery and Jamie Hirai, 21-12, 21-6, before Julia Golbeck and Kaitlynn Zdroik fall in three sets, 21-13, 19-21, 15-8. Giulia Gávio and Luiza Andrande won at the number-three position, 21-18, 21-19. Saint Mary's then won the final two matches in straight sets. The Gaels have won seven of their eight matches lately, the only loss coming Sunday to #1 USC.
San José State did sweep an exhibition over West Valley, 5-0, earlier in the day.
The Spartans travel to Stanford this Friday, April 7, at 4 p.m., and to California this Saturday, April 8, at 1 p.m.
