Men's Golf Competing at Mountain West Championship

San Jose, Calif.--- The San José State University men's golf team will be traveling to Tucson, Arizona for the 2017 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship. The tournament will take place April 21-23 on the par 72, 7,194-yard Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort.

Competing in the three day, 54-hole tournament will be the 11 Mountain West teams: UNLV, San Diego State, New Mexico, Colorado State, Nevada, Wyoming, Fresno State, Utah State, Boise State, San José State, Airforce.

The starting lineup for the Spartans will be Kevin Velo, Scott Munger, Sean Talmadge, Henrik Sohlberg and Matthew Ashley.

Last Time Out: The Spartans last hosted the 71st Annual Western Intercollegiate where they finished in 14th place, and shot a score of 1,134 on the par 70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club.

Kevin Velo shot eight over par 218 and tied for 35th. He had the best Spartan score with an even-par 70.

William Barnett tied for 60th at 14-over par 224.

Southern California took home first place with an 18-stroke win over defending champion Stanford. The Trojans finished at even-par 1050.

San Jose native, Justin Suh, took home the blue jacket for the Trojans shooting five-under par 205.

At The Western, five players recorded what is believed to be the most holes in one in a men's golf college tournament ever:

  1. Hunter Epson, Pepperdine, round 1, 15th hole with a pitching wedge.
  2. Robert Geibel, Pepperdine, round 1, 3rd hole with a 5-iron.
  3. William Aldred, California, round 2, 15th hole with a 9-iron.
  4. William Aldred, California, round 3, 8th hole with a 7-iron.
  5. Daniel List, Washington, round 3, 8th hole with a 6-iron.

Previously at the Mountain West Championship: The Spartans finished in 8th place shooting five-over par 869.

Scott Munger shot three-over par 219 and tied for 30th.

Kevin Velo and Matthew Murray both tied for 36th shooting six-over par 222.
