Los Angeles, Calif.----- For the second time this season, the University of Southern California jumped out in front of San Jose State University early and did not let up in a 17-2 victory over the Spartans in quarterfinal round play of the 2017 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championship.
The #3-seeded and #3-ranked Trojans (26-2) led 11-0 in the third quarter before Donia Momen scored her first of San Jose State's (10-18) two goals of the match at 5:24. Momen found the back of the cage again at 6:21 of the fourth quarter on a 5-meter penalty shot.
Katelynn Thompson started in goal for San Jose State and played the first half. She was credited with two saves. Tayler Peters was the Spartans' goalkeeper for the second half and made two saves. USC goalkeeper Victoria Chamorro stopped 10 San Jose State shots.
"...Literally, they (USC) converted on every opportunity. We didn't make stops on defense, didn't make good decisions on offense and they converted on their counter attack," said San Jose State head coach Gabor Sarusi about the first half.
USC's Avery Peterson was the leading scorer in the match with three. Ten other Trojans scored at least once.
The Spartans face CSU Bakersfield, Saturday, April 29, at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination match. The winner will play for fifth place on Sunday, April 30. The loser will be the seventh place team in the seven-team tournament.
San Jose State posted an 8-7 win over CSU Bakersfield on April 21 at West Valley College.
