The Spartans Host The 71st Annual Western Intercollegiate

San Jose, Calif.--- The San José State University men's golf team will host the 71st Annual Transamerica/(WFG) Western Intercollegiate at the Alister MacKenzie designed, Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz California April 8-9.

The Western Intercollegiate is a par 70, 6,615-yard course. The players will compete in a 54-hole tournament that will feature 36-holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. Players will tee off at 8:15 a.m. Saturday on a shotgun start.

The tournament has a 15-team field that includes Arizona, #25 Arizona State, California, Hawai'i,#9 Oregon, Pepperdine, San Diego State, San José State, #1 Southern California, #7 Stanford, #17 Texas, UC Irvine, UCLA, UTEP, and Washington.

The Western will feature half of the top 10 players in the nation. #1 Collin Morikawa from California, #2 Wyndham Clark and #9 Norman Xiong from Oregon, #4 Jared duToit of Arizona State University, and #6 Maverick McNealy of Stanford.

There will be 96 players competing for the coveted Blue Jacket, awarded to The Western Intercollegiate champion.

The Western Intercollegiate has a notable history of tournament champions which include Johnny Miller, Peter Jacobsen, Mark O'Meara, Duffy Waldorf, Bobby Clampett, Patrick Rodgers.

San José State has the most tournament team champions (12) and individual champions (12).

The Spartans last competed at The Goodwin where the top Spartan finisher was Sean Talmadge who tied for 46th place with 220.

William Barnett tied for 93rd at 228; Kevin Velo and Scott Munger tied for 100th at 229; Charles Thompson placed 122 at 238.

Previously at The Western Intercollegiate:

Last season when the Spartans played at The Western they placed 13th with a total score of 1,127.

Kevin Velo competed in his first tournament at the western leading the Spartans with a score of nine-over par 219 tied for 42nd.

Scott Munger tied 56th at 222; Matthew Murray tied 62nd at 224.
