Box Score
PHOENIX - In the final game at Brazell Stadium on the campus of Grand Canyon University, the San Jose State University baseball team lost 8-5 to the Lopes, splitting the two-game series.
The Spartans are now 16-31-1 on the season with the Lopes moving to 25-23.
The game was similar to Monday's contest where GCU jumped to an early lead, scoring three runs in the second inning with the Spartans quickly answering back while the bullpen held the opposition in check.
Zanger came into the game in the second inning inheriting two runners after Grand Canyon battered Spartan starter Zach Wallace for five hits and three runs in 1 2/3 innings. Zanger got a grounder to end the second and pitched a total of three innings allowing three hits while the offense chipped away at GCU's lead.
After scoring a pair of runs in the third, the Spartans took a 4-3 lead in the fourth on a two-run RBI double by Chris Williams (2-for-3, 3 RBI, BB) to score Ander Davidson (2-for-4, 2 R) and Kellen Strahm (1-for-3, R).
In the fifth, Shane Timmons (1-for-5, R, RBI) cranked a home run over the left field wall to make it a 5-3 contest. It was Timmons' nine home run of the season.
However, unlike Tuesday's game, GCU came back to tie the game. The Lopes scored two-runs in the sixth on a balk by Jeremy Polon and an RBI double by Ian Evans.
The game remained tied until the eighth when SJSU ran into issues defensively, making two in the inning which to lead to three unearned runs for what turned out to be the final margin of victory, 8-5.
GCU's new stadium project will break ground following today's game making it the last game at Brazell Stadium that the San Jose State University program was part of.
The Spartans continue their non-conference slate on Friday, May 12 when it travels north to take on the University of San Francisco for a two-game series with the first pitch at 1:00 p.m. PT for both games. The two teams will play against each other on Sunday and Monday back at Municipal Stadium.
