LAS VEGAS - The San Jose State University baseball team beat UNLV, 10-6, in the 2017 season finale to finish in sole position of sixth place in the Mountain West conference. It is the best finish for the Spartans in Mountain West play since joining the conference for the 2014 baseball season.
SJSU finished with an overall record of 19-35-1, 10-18-1 in conference play. UNLV ended its season 20-36 overall, 10-19 in conference.
The 19 win total and 10 conference wins both tied for the most wins in a season since 2014 when SJSU joined the MW baseball season. The 2014 team achieved its record in 57 games whereas the 2017 team did it in 55 games after two of its games were cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Spartans were led offensively by senior Michael Breen (2-for-4, R, 4 RBI) who had a career-high four RBI including his first career home run. The home run came in the top of the fourth with Kellen Strahm (2-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB) on base to give the Spartans a 6-0 lead.
Four Spartans had multiple hits with Chris Williams (3-for-5, 2 R, RBI) leading the way with three hits. The Spartans had 12 hits total in the game to score 10 runs, its second highest run output of the season.

Senior Jack Veasey (2-for-4, R) playing his last game as a Spartan - along with Breen, Joseph Stefanki (BB), pitchers Graham Gomez and Zach Tanner - collected two hits.
Joseph Balfour started on the mound for the Spartans and pitched a season-best eight innings allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out five and walking just one batter. Balfour picked up his first win as a Spartan to improve to 1-4.
All five seniors got an opportunity to play. In the ninth, both Gomez and Tanner pitched with Gomez getting the first two outs and Tanner closing out the game to cap their Spartan careers.
