Norfolk, Va.----- The streak is up to nine semesters in a row for the San Jose State University women's swimming and diving team to be honored for team academic excellence by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
A 2017 spring semester record-setting team grade-point average of 3.48 on a 4.00 easily exceeded the 3.00 requirement to earn Scholar All-America Team honors from the CSCAA.
"Coach Sage Hopkins has done an exceptional job building a top program in the pool and the classroom at San Jose State," said Joel Shinofield, the CSCAA's executive director. "We are very fortunate to have schools like San Jose State and people like President (Mary A.) Papazian and Director of Athletics (Marie) Tuite who support these exceptional student-athletes."
"This is a great testament as to how hard they are working in the classroom. They got the job done -- highest team GPA ever. I'm so proud of them," San Jose State University women's swimming and diving coach said.
The CSCAA also announced its annual Scholar All-America teams. Divers Kylie Fonseca and Cari Reiswig and swimmers Brenna Bushey, Colleen Humel, and Taylor Solorio were named as honorable mention award winners for earning a 3.50 grade-point average and participating either in the NCAA Zone Diving Championships or earning a "B" cut to compete in the NCAA Swimming Championships.
Reiswig and Humel, a school record-setting backstroke specialist, earned the Scholar All-America honorable mention award for the third year in a row. Bushey, who established a new San Jose State record in the 100 butterfly in February 2017, picked up her second in as many years. Solorio and Fonseca are first-time national award recipients.
"They epitomize the `student-athlete.' They are achieving at a national level athletically and getting the job done (in the classroom) with over a 3.5 academically," Hopkins said.
"Congratulations to Coach Hopkins and our swimming and diving team. They had superior grades individually, set a school record for academic excellence collectively, and deserve to be recognized by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association again for all their academic achievements," said San Jose State University Director of Athletics Marie Tuite.
