San Jose State Football Off & Running

July 29, 2017

The San Jose State University football team completed its first day of official practice with more than 100 players looking to make a strong first impression.

"I thought the energy was great. Our coaches were driving it. The players were into it. We have a lot of young players and it shows," says Spartans first-year head coach Brent Brennan. Of the 100-plus players on the field, 42 were not on last year's team and 16 more are redshirts that did not play a down in 2016.

Defensive lineman Bryson Bridges is a Spartan with starting experience. You couldn't tell who he was on the first day of practice, since he changed his uniform number to #9, he sported a new hair style for him and he wore a number other than #9 since San Jose State is waiting for its football apparel to arrive.

"...It's been a couple of months since we've been back," says Bridges, who said the team spent a lot of community service time over the summer. "Coming out, getting the jitters out, getting the kinks out, it was a very good day.

"(The D-line) is getting better. We have a lot of depth. It really helps. We have a lot of young guys in the program."

The Spartans will be on the practice field next to CEFCU Stadium, Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30, starting at 9:00 a.m.
